I painted "Mootisse" in the spirit of Henri Matisse, who introduced unnaturalistic color and vivid brushstrokes into his paintings in the summer of 1905. The witty critic Louis Vauxcelles was inspired to call Matisse, André Derain, and the painters who followed them "Fauves" (wild beasts). The name stuck and the movement became known as Fauvism.
